-[Listen]- The GTW Champions the Chigeria Movement
In a Chicago music scene best known for the fragments that make up it’s whole, it’s great to see someone like The GTW wear the city’s mosaic on his shoulders like a classic Cross Colours bomber. A perfect combination of old and new.
The GTW’s special blend of downtempo house and r&b borrows bits of the drill music sound (drill bits?) and world grooves to power the Chigeria energy grid, the quasi-geographic inspiration for the sound applied. Each song is like it’s own locale, sometimes airy and sometimes somber in nature.
Below you’ll find a quick handcrafted SoundCloud mix detailing some of our favorites from the last few years of work by this stellar artist. Make sure to stick around to the end of the list to get a sonic overview of the whole Chigeria sound, as influenced by direct friends and colleagues of The GTW himself.
If you’re in the Chicago area on April 24th, make sure you catch his Empty Bottle performance. A guaranteed good time.
